Located immediately adjacent to the Lion Monument, the Glacier Garden with its giant pothole rock formations dating from the Ice Age ranks amongst Switzerland's oldest places of tourist interest, as does the neighbouring Mirror Maze. The Residence Museum contains much that is of domestic interest, and the pleasant park with its Observation Tower is waiting to be discovered.

Traces of the Ice Age discovered in 1872 attracted a great deal of interest from scientists and public alike, as did much older evidence that the climate in the area of Lucerne was once subtropical. An agreeable green oasis soon developed around these prehistoric attractions. Paths lead to the Observation Tower with its views over the town and mountains. The chalet-style Residence Museum houses displays of geological and historical interest. A particular attraction is the large-scale Landscape Reliefs: the relief of Central Switzerland by Franz Ludwig Pfyffer made in the 18th century is thought to be the oldest such exhibit in the world. Not to be missed, and a high point of any visit to the Glacier Garden whatever your age, is the amazing century-old Alhambra Mirror Maze.
